Carl’s Mo-Bot celebrates posting great sales

Congrats cards top sellers in Olympic Village coup

THE MO-BOT was a great way for Carl Birks to celebrate Riverside Cards brilliant London 2012 deal of being the sole supplier to the Olympics village.

While off-duty as the company's MD, Carl found the golden postbox in Teddington painted in tribute to double gold medallist Mo Farah where he was pictured performing the homage.
“I couldn’t get photos of any Olympic medal winners next to the greetings card display,” Carl said, “as I wasn’t allowed access due to high security – this was a consolation prize!”
Riverside had a captive audience of 30,000 athletes and officials for their products during the main Games and have already re-stocked ready for the Paralympics’ opening ceremony on August 29.
Top sellers during the main Games were post cards which made up 40 per cent of sales, 30 per cent were greetings cards with the hand-made Bella range adding another 15 per cent, followed by London-branded iPhone cases, the Rolson universal adaptor, ponchos and party balloons.
As sole supplier of greetings cards and peripherals to the UK’s three top catering service providers Riverside was called in at the last minute to supply the venue and expects the deal with to allow them to provide other non-food retail solutions in their growing portfolio of independent accounts.
In the lull between Team GB’s best medal haul yet and the start of the Paralympics Carl added: “We had to pull together the best range possible with demographics and foreign athletes in mind.
“Plenty of congrats, well done, get well – you never know, somebody might get injured - birthday blanks and, of course, our new Team GB range!
“Obviously congrats, good luck and blank birthday have been the best-selling captions, 50 per cent of total greetings card sales, and we’ve topped them up ready for the next round of wannabe Olympians.
“The retail outlet is like a new-looking convenience store and is adjacent to the village canteen. It’s low level and spacious which gives it a fantastic feel and it’s been very busy throughout the day.
“All deliveries have been airport-style scanned whether it’s a greetings card or a can of pop!”
