Riverside win gold medal deal

Last-minute decision earns Carl Olympic Village contract

WHAT cards do you pick to sell to a captive audience of 30,000 athletes and officials – congratulations and get well!

That was the dilemma facing Riverside Cards when a last-minute request to supply the London 2012 Olympic Village canteen and convenience outlet came through.
“We had to pull together the best range possible,” said MD Carl Birks, “with demographics and foreign athletes in mind.
“Plenty of congrats, well done, get well – you never know, somebody might get injured - birthday blanks and, of course, our new Team GB range!
“We don’t have any different language cards, however blank, photographic are always a winner. We have also supplied a number of other lines such as party, postcards, iPhone cases, phone chargers, inflatable neck cushions and other non-food convenience essentials that we have supplied of through a partnership that we have set up with
“The retail outlet is like a new-looking convenience store and is adjacent to the village canteen. It’s low level and spacious which gives it a fantastic feel and it’s been very busy throughout the day.
“All deliveries are airport-style scanned whether it’s a greetings card or a can of pop!”
The village is home to 15,000 athletes and a further 15,000 staff, trainers and officials and is designed so none need to leave throughout the Games.
As sole supplier of greetings cards and peripherals to the UK’s three top catering service providers Riverside won the contract to supply this prestigious venue and expects the deal with to allow them to provide other non-food retail solutions in their growing portfolio of independent accounts.
Carl added: “The best sellers to date are blank birthday, humour, postcards, iPhone cases and universal chargers. It’s a captive audience so we believe we can maximise the potential over the next few weeks – the site does not officially close until the first week of September as we have the Paralympics coming up shortly as well.”
