Grinch has Xmas wrapped up

Plans to expand licensing programme into cards too

PLANS are afoot to let everyone be a complete Grinch at Christmas as the licensing programme for the classic Dr Seuss character is being expanded to include wrapping paper and cards.

In partnership with Dr Seuss Enterprises, independent licensing company Rocket Licensing are in discussions to take the book How The Grinch Stole Christmas into more apparel categories as well as seasonal non-clothing sectors.
“We could not be more excited by the overwhelming success our favourite green curmudgeon is experiencing in the UK,” said Susan Brandt, President Licensing and Marketing for Dr. Seuss Enterprises.
“Our hearts have grown three sizes knowing that people in the UK love The Grinch just as much as we do in the US.”
The book and film starring Jim Carrey have become a holiday tradition and the brand has seen enormous retail success through sales of Grinch-branded merchandise including sweatshirts, t-shirts, and other apparel.
And the popularity of the Grinch’s holiday disposition and edgy humour has extended his appeal across all age groups – Dr Seuss himself, Theodor Geisel, died in 1991 but always said he never wanted to licence his characters to anyone who would “round out the edges” and his widow Audrey is sticking to this philosophy as CEO of the company.
Rocket have managed the European licensing business on behalf of Dr Seuss Enterprises since 2011 including books such as The Cat In The Hat, The Lorax, and Fox In Socks, and Joint MD Rob Wijeratna said: “With consumers enthusiastically seeking out the Grinch at retail every Christmas, expanding the portfolio is clearly a no-brainer.
“We see enormous opportunities for this clever, funny and very different Christmas hero across a wide range of appropriate categories and are already in discussion with potential licences for Christmas 2016.”
