Pretty ugly

New licence for love letter doodle that grew into a brand

AN UGLYDOLL drawn on a love letter is about to become a plush toy thanks to a licensing deal between brand owners Pretty Ugly and the Commonwealth Toy & Novelty Co.

The first Uglydoll, Wage, was created as a hand-sewn toy in 2001 after David Horvath drew it on a love letter to Sun-Min Kim, and the couple have since developed an entire universe of characters, stories and products defining “ugly” as distinctive and unique.
“We are very excited about our newest partnership with Commonwealth,” said Drew Matilsky, Pretty Ugly Managing Partner, “their vision in the marketplace and passion for the Uglydoll brand as well as their expertise in manufacturing and distributing plush dolls is second to none.”
Commonwealth President Steven Greenfield added: "Commonwealth Toy is proud to be the new home for Uglydolls. They will be the anchor of our specialty division and we are thrilled to be launching Uglydoll's new cast of characters in 2016.”
