Travel business rises see Smiths “remain confident” despite fall on High Street

HIGH Street sales were down for WH Smith, but the travel business is up according to their latest trading update.

Total group sales were up by one per cent, while like-for-like sales were flat in the quarter to May 30, compared to the same period last year.
In High Street business total sales were down four per cent in the period with like-for-like sales also down four per cent, in line with expectations and WH Smith’s profit-focused strategy, while gross margin improvement and cost savings have been delivered in line with plan.
In the travel business total sales were up eight per cent in the period with like-for-like sales up four per cent, reflecting the continued sales trends across WH Smith’s UK channels and initiatives.
The report stated: “Our Food To Go range, the rollout of which was completed last summer, continues to be well received by our customers.
“We saw gross margin improvement and our new store opening programme, both in the UK and internationally, is progressing well.
“We will continue to focus on profitable growth and cash generation while investing in new opportunities in both travel and High Street that position us well for the future. We remain confident in the outcome for the full year.”
