What a Whalley!

Not such a daft move for Dom as he releases new volume of naughty names

IN A MOVE that can only be described as sound business sense for the brains behind the Lesser Spotted Britain road signs card and gift ranges, they’ve relocated to a place with a daft name.

Moving out of London was made easier for Lesser Spotted Images by the fact the destination was Whalley Range – although owner Dominic Greyer is slightly disappointed at the incorrect spelling of Wally! In addition to this major life change, Dom’s second volume of great British road sign photographs is due to be published by Portico, an imprint of Pavilion, on Thursday July 9.
Cunningly titled Lesser Spotted Britain, this book follows hot on the heels of 2004's Far From Dull And Other Places and features photographs of such place-name gems as Glam, Cheese Bottom, Lady Gardens, Long Length and Benny's Hill. There are more than 100 new photo accompanied by etymologies and maps – plus a foreword from writer/producer Robert Popper, creator of C4's Friday Night Dinner.
This recalls the highpoint of Dominic's own TV career which involved having raw steak thrown at him whilst wearing purple pants followed by brain surgery with a hand drill for the cult comedy show Look Around You – a scene named in the top-50 funniest moments of 2002! With fine understatement, The Times have said: “Dominic Greyer has got a fine eye for the absurd,” and Lesser Spotted Britain is available as a hardback with a £9.99 RRP.
