Wolves new boss Stuart means business

Top rugby league club’s new chairman is Card Factory creative director

CARD Factory’s creative director Stuart Middleton has turned his business acumen on to Warrington Wolves rugby league team by becoming chairman after two years on the board.

Having helped build the value greetings and gift retailers where he is a major shareholder, lifelong fan Stuart has already invested £1million to help with transfer fees and stadium renovations, and has pledged to match that over the next four years.
Stuart (pictured) is also in the process of setting up the Stuart Middleton Foundation to nurture local rugby talent and help youngsters from underprivileged backgrounds.
He started out supporting the Super League club from the terraces at their old Wilderspool ground, and his first business Excelsior, which he started on his dining room table designing and printing greetings cards, were sponsors of the scoreboard there.
Having joined Card Factory in 2006, he helped with the floatation on the London Stock Exchange in 2015, and the company now employ more than 6,500 people and open on average one store each week with more than 900 branches now operating across the UK and Ireland.
The Warrington Guardian reported that Stuart “is part of a powerhouse team of businessmen with the financial might to back the Wolves, which includes club owner and owner of music promoters SJM Simon Moran and fellow board member Mike Lomax, who runs Total Steel. Together they form surely the most influential board in British rugby league.”
And Stuart told the newspaper: “We have a stated aim of being a consistent top four club and being one of the best in the world and we are determined to achieve that.
“I’m honoured to become the chairman of Warrington Wolves, the club that I have supported most of my life and that I care passionately about.
“It’s not all about the status but more about making a difference, ensuring that we have financial security, a strong and robust business plan with success ingrained in our culture and ethos.
“A winning attitude starts at the top and filters down.”
