‘Show pony’ rides up design rankings

Paperchase’s admired Glasgow flagship store climbs four places in Retail Week chart

PAPERCHASE’S Glasgow flagship store has hit the headlines on the design front for the second year running – rising four places up Retail Week’s rankings.

Retail Week stores editor John Ryan (pictured), who also writes a monthly column fro Greetings Today, revealed this year’s list of the top 25 stores by design with Apple’s Regent Street outlet at number one, having risen from eighth last year to push Selfridges in Oxford Street down into second place.
Last year’s list showed the top 30 stores with Paperchase’s Scottish flagship (pictured) in 29th place – now they have risen to 25th.
John’s verdict is: “Stationers Paperchase opened their store at the top end of Glasgow’s Buchanan Street in 2013. This is a two-floor branch and while, at 15,000 sq ft, it is very much smaller than Paperchase’s larger Tottenham Court Road outpost, it has all the trappings that shoppers expect of a retail show-pony.
“From the large glass frontage, designed to look like an envelope, to the modern take on a Palladian staircase on the left-hand side of the mid-shop, this may be design-neutral, as the design company that created the store blueprint claims, but it is hard not to admire what has been done.
“The number-one slot goes to Apple – not because they have a new store, but owing to the fact that now the wraps are off their Regent Street flagship, following a protracted period in which it was being refurbished and during which much of it was closed, it is a thing of beauty.”
