Faye’s new dimension wins title

3D cards take top two places in BCTF greetings card awards as show finishes today

GOING 3D has proved a winner for Faye Stevens as her three-dimensional designs won this year’s Greetings Card Award at the British Craft Trade Fair yesterday.

And, with the three-day show closing at 5pm today, Tuesday, April 10, there’s only a short while to make your way to the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate to see all six winners of the Greetings Today-sponsored award in situ.
The standard was so high, three commended certificates were awarded to Catherine Kleeli Cards, The DM Collection, and newbies Artinker, with Rhombus And Pineapple taking the Highly Commended slot, and Rhian Winslade Ceramics named the Just Because…winners, as Faye Stevens earned the 2018 title.
It’s the third time Greetings Today have run the awards at the PSM-organised show that specialises in products made exclusively in the UK and Ireland, and an expanded judging panel whittled down more than 70 card exhibitors to a long list who were visited yesterday by editor Tracey Bearton and retailer and judge Caron Naylor, from the Gift House at Blacker Hall Farm in West Yorkshire.
Greeting Card Association president Ceri Stirland, who is also UK Greetings’ customer and service channel director, was also on the pre-show panel along with The Art File MD Ged Mace, Giftware Association CEO Sarah Ward, GA chairman and independent retail advisor Henri Davis, sales agent Ian Bradley, and retailers Jenny Morrison of Top Drawer Gifts in St Andrews, Fife, and Carl Dunne of Cards & Gifts, Sheffield.
Sarah commented that the standard of cards was particularly strong this year and Henri, who also works with Scribbler, especially asked for a show catalogue as “there are some great publishers I’d like to pass on to Scribbler”.
Tracey said: “It doesn’t get any easier choosing between the fabulous cards on offer which is why we ended up with three commended and a longer short list!
“Every greetings exhibitor is considered for the awards, which are judged on commerciality, originality and wow factor, so we do stumble across extras on the day as not everyone includes their cards in the catalogue submission – that’s how we found Rhian Winslade yesterday, and felt her ceramic designs were really unusual and worthy of the Just Because…prize as that’s the extra one for an exhibitor the judges really like.”
Caron took the opportunity for a jolly good look at the exhibitors and said: “Two are already on my list to stock, and there are some others I’m going back for another look.
“I love Faye’s pressed flower cards, and her new cats and twist out flowers, and the detail in Rhombus And Pineapple’s laser-cut designs is amazing – and they have some great male designs, which is something I’m always looking for.”
In addition to the prizewinners, who each receive a certificate and coverage in Greetings Today, the judges drew up a shortlist of exhibitors worth a mention: Death By Tea, Dilly & Pink, Fairy Made Paperart, Hannah Longmuir Arts, Jill Ray Landscapes, Joanne Wishart, Judy Lumley Print, Lucy Alice Designs, The Reversible Robin, Rosalind White, Ruth Thorp Studio, and Snapdragon Designs.
The awards were presented at the end of the show yesterday, with the exhibitors themselves voting for the Wow Factor, the full list of winners is below.
