Ilona is more snail

Publisher draws on colourful skills for sculpture set to hit Brighton streets

THERE’S no slowing down for Ilona Drew as the I Drew This publisher is busy decorating a giant snail.

Yes, you read that right – huge snails will be taking over the streets of Brighton for this year’s Martlets Hospice project.
“We’ve been chosen to take part in the much-anticipated #BeMoreSnail,” Ilona said, “The project follows the wonderful Snow Dogs By The Sea of last year – you won’t be disappointed!
“I can't reveal too much about the design as the idea is that it’s kept a secret until the big reveal in September – however I can tell you that it is very colourful like my work as these sneaky peek photos show.”
Ilona is pictured meeting her unpainted snail when the sculptures for Snailspace were unveiled recently by superstar DJ and local resident Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, with a number of artists like Ilona being asked to decorate them.
The public art installation raised £310,000 for Martlets last year and contributed more than £10million to the local economy – and local businesses in Brighton and Hove have been invited to sponsor their own snail sculpture before the installation goes live in the autumn.
Martlets CEO Imelda Glackin said: “The snail sculpture resonates wonderfully with the work we do at Martlets. Our life-changing hospice care helps people do the things they love with the time they have.
“In this fast-paced city it’s often hard to remember to slow down and appreciate the things in life that make us smile. The strikingly-painted snails across our city will be a constant reminder to take a moment to enjoy the time we have with the people we share our lives with.”
Charlie Langhorne, director of Wild In Art added: “Love them or hate them, everyone will be talking about snails!
“Brighton is a quirky, creative city and needed an unexpected sculpture to follow the Snowdogs. #BeMoreSnail is a motto we’re sure Brighton will embrace.”
