Animals! triumph at License This!

Quirky creatures take Brand & Design category with Oddcats! winning Character & Animation

COLOURFUL quirky creatures have topped the Brand & Design category in this year’s License This! final held yesterday afternoon, with Sarah Burman’s Animals! collection taking the title.

And with two trophies in the long-running competition for the first time, the Character & Animation sector was won by the Oddcats! characters from Zara Picken as head judge Kelvyn Gardner praised the six finalists picked from a record number of entries.
Animals! is a range of colourful, characterful quirky animal designs with a unique patchwork texture, strong colours and a hint of retro, while the Oddcats pre-school property features a mob of mischievous creatures with a distinct stitch design and a taste for globetrotting adventure and socks.
The winners were announced yesterday, Thursday, October 11, at Brand Licensing Europe following five-minute presentations from the finalists – Animals!, Oddcats!, Austrian greetings publishers Pabuku, Drew Bristow’s smudge characters Blubz, Argentinian animated anti-bullying series The Real  Monster Show, and Celia Law’s vintage doll social media star Gail Grisham – to the panel of judges.
“License This! has been going for 10 years,” Kelvyn, MD of the Licensing Industry Manufacturers’ Association UK, said, “and has grown in stature, and this year had a record number of entries.
“In anticipation – and because last year was the previous record – we decided to split the categories for the first time as there is a lot of difference between them.
“We had six fantastically original and diverse properties in two very distinctive categories, there was licensing potential in each one, which made for a very difficult decision, but we are confident we have picked two very worthy winners from the class of License This! 2018.”
Kelvyn and cross-category judge Christina Schiavone, of competition sponsors Wynne-Jones, were joined on the panel by Danilo Promotions’ Dan Grant, Sambro’s Nikki Samuels, Clare Piggott of Larkshead Media, M&Co’s Julia Redman and Steve Manners of CPLG to pick the overall Character & Animation winner, while I Like Birds’ Stuart Cox, Will Stewart of The Point 1888, Vicki Thomas Associates’ Vicki Thomas, Sarah Lawrence of This Is Iris and Jehane Ltd’s Jehane Boden Spiers looked after the Brand & Design side.
The winners will receive a free exhibition stand at BLE 2019, one year’s LIMA membership, PR support and advice from a panel of industry experts. In addition, for the first time, all six finalists will receive legal consultation from competition sponsors Wynn-Jones.
Previous entrants – both winners and finalists including 2016’s I Like Birds – have also signed lucrative agent and licensing deals off the back of the competition.
