Cherry Orchard support July 4 campaign which calls for shoppers to spend £5


BLOW American Independence Day – it’s Independents’ Day today, July 4, a celebration of all the fabulous indie retailers across the United Kingdom.

And the annual campaign is calling on shoppers to spend just £5 in an indie store today as the organisers’ calculations show that if every adult spent just a fiver a week, it would generate around £13.5billion a year worth of additional revenue for small businesses in the retail sector.
At least 100 different town management teams, business improvement districts and local business groups across the country are participating in initiatives to promote the day, according to the organisers.
And Cherry Orchard are among those in the greetings industry supporting the campaign, along with British Independent Retailers’ Association and the Independent Retailers’ Confederation.
Cherry Orchard contributed to the blog on the website with a guide to celebrating independent retail on Independents’ Day, and are also hosting a Razzle Dazzle party at their design studio in Kent this evening for their stockists to see behind the scenes at how their products are made.
With their 25th anniversary coming up next year, co-founder and Cherry Orchard MD Jackie Collins has organised the informal get-together for a specially-invited audience of VIP guests from the greetings card world to network and enjoy champagne and canapes.
And they’ll get to meet the whole Cherry Orchard team, see their latest products – and pick up a goodie bag worth £200 (based on RRP).
“We’re lucky that the industry knowledge and expertise built up by our reps has come from listening to retailers who are passionate about their business and the greetings card industry,” said Jackie, who is pictured with her sales team.
“It’s always heartening to meet with retailers and hear how they drive their businesses forward in what can be challenging times and we wanted to do something to show some moral support which is why we’re joining in with the Independents’ Day campaign.”
Independents’ Day UK is a not-for-profit campaign that exists to support and promote independent retail businesses across the UK all year round, but with an annual focus on July 4, Independents’ Day itself.
With independents accounting for around 65 per cent of the approximate 290,000 retail outlets in the UK, they get involved by running special events and promotions including themed window displays, High Street festivities, discounts and offers.
Campaign spokesman Howard Robinson said: “Whether it’s supplies for Saturday’s barbecue, or strawberries and cream to enjoy while watching Wimbledon on the telly, the message is simple – spend £5 with an independent business this Thursday.
“We’re familiar with High Street closures hitting the headlines, but data released by BIRA showed it’s not all doom and gloom, with independent retailers opening 4.5 per cent more shops in 2018 than in 2017.
“However, this number was offset by a record number of stores closing (35,524), which led to an overall net decline of 1,013 shops. As far as independent retail is concerned, it really is a case of use them, or lose them.
“Whether it’s one-day-only discounts and promotions or unique collaborations with other local businesses, Independents’ Day should act as a vehicle to drive people to your premises.”
