Exciting new brands announced as License This! finalists in BLE comp

EIGHT exciting entrepreneurs have been shortlisted for this year’s Brand Licensing Europe License This! final following a record number of entries.

An intense judging day saw the panel, including Danilo licensing director Dan Grant and I Like Birds founder and former License This! finalist Stuart Cox, pick five brands for the Character & Animation category, with three going forward for the Brand & Design award.
The final will take place on the last day of the show, organised by Global Licensing Group from Tuesday to Thursday, October 1-3, at the new venue of ExCeL London, with everyone invited to the License Global Theatre at 1pm to hear the finalists’ presentations from which the judges will choose one winner in each category.
The Character & Animation finalists are Adorabubbles, Carrot & Toast, My Little Opera, Noodoll, and Slime Fury from Argentina, with Italy’s Minu Tiny Little Wonders, Orange & Lilly from Hungary, and Owlasanas making the cut in Brand & Design – (there are interviews with these three below).
“Having been part of the judging panel for the past three years, it was really pleasing to see some new and varied proposals,” said Dan Grant, “we had a great selection of properties to judge this year from all around the world, which shows how much exposure this event is now receiving.
“From the long list of entries, we have been able to nominate properties for the final that all have something different and exciting to offer. It’s now down to the finalists to convince the panel why their property should win the prize and I’m really looking forward to judging the final.”
Chair and Licensing International UK MD Kelvyn Gardner added: “The contest has evolved as a filter for genuine new licensing talent not just from the UK but with a great international dimension.
“We have responded by now offering two categories – character & animation and brand & design – which in turn has boosted entry numbers and quality. With past winners and finalists now having launched successful licensing programmes, License This! really is the place to go if you’re looking for your start.”
This year’s License This! winners will receive a free exhibition stand at BLE 2020, one year’s Licensing International membership, PR support and advice from a panel of industry experts, and all finalists will receive legal consultation from competition sponsor Wynne-Jones.
Previous entrants – both winners and finalists – have also signed lucrative agent and licensing deals off the back of the competition, with I Like Birds designs now found across calendars with BrownTrout, greetings cards with The Art File, stationery with Quadrille Publishing and homewares from My Gifts Trade, while May The Thoughts Be With You have been signed up by Danilo for calendars and cards.
Last year’s winners, Zara Picken’s Oddcats! and Animals! From Sarah Burman Designs – are both exhibitors at BLE 2019 and can be found in the Art, Design & Image zone.
Giftware Association CEO Sarah Ward is joining the judging panel for the first time, along with Wynne-Jones partner Victor Caddy, while Dan Grant will be judging the Character & Entertainment side with Sambro licensing director Nikki Samuels, Larkshead Media director Clare Piggott, and Julia Redman, head of buying at M&Co, and in the Brand & Design category Stuart Cox is joining by Vicki Thomas Associates owner Vicki Thomas, This Is Iris owner Sarah Lawrence, Jehane founder Jehane Boden Spiers, and The Point 1888 MD Will Stewart.

LICENSE THIS! BRAND & DESIGN FINALISTS

OWLASANAS – EVGENIA MALINA

How did you hear about License This!?

“I first found about the show last year, not sure exactly on what website, something like Pattern Observer or something related to the greeting cards business. I went to the show to have a look at what’s io trend these days, and to learn what licensing is.”

Why did you enter?
“I’m hoping to find someone to license my pictures for their products, o hear an honest opinion about my brand – and most of all I want to enter the world of big players, and the show looks like the right gate to it.

Describe your property.
“A bunch of funny fat owls doing yoga. You working on what now? Yoga owls? People smile at them even without seeing the pictures. I love that.”

What’s your dream for your brand when it becomes a licensing programme?
“I want to be proud of my silly owls. I would like to see them on some eco-friendly products of perfect quality that make people feel good.

What are you hoping to get from being a part of the competition?
“At least a new experience and useful contacts. New ideas. New projects and contracts.”

Finally, how does it feel being shortlisted?
“I’m over the moon, cannot believe I made it. After I sent my presentation, I said to myself, ‘ok, forget about it now, just keep going’. It feels awesome and I’m a bit terrified as there will be an audience of potential buyers to present it to. I wanted it more than anything in my life. Thank you so much for this opportunity.”

MINU TINY LITTLE WONDERS – EMANUELA BARBINI WWW.YUMEDESIGN.IT

How did you hear about License This!?

“We learned about the competition because one of the brands for which we follow the designs of the back to school items invited us to visit their booth at BLE so we visited the website of the Exhibition to get some more information.”

Why did you enter?
“We have been working with licensees for 20 years, helping them design and develop successful collections with licensed brands – Sanrio, Santoro, Disney, Pantone, Benetton just to mention a few. In 2019 the time to create our own brand had finally arrived. When we heard about the competition, we worked hard in order to finalise everything on time for entering. This competition is a great initiative for helping new brands getting a foot in the crowded world of licensing and get noticed.”

Describe your property.
“Minu, with her pink curls and her big flower-shaped eyes, captures the surprising nuances of our world. The handmade watercolour-based graphic gives this brand a romantic and sophisticated touch, balanced by the vivid colours and the geometry of the patterns, inspired by the microscopic world of nature.”

What’s your dream for your brand when it becomes a licensing programme?
“We would like to support our licensing partners in the creation of unique collections and in translating our brand concept and style into successful products.”

What are you hoping to get from being a part of the competition?
“We hope to be helped in getting into the licensing world and find interesting partners.”

Finally, how does it feel being shortlisted?
“That’s absolutely great! We are very excited!”
