Woodies sparkle at Wayzgoose

Annual printers’ shindig sees Watford firm triumph over Windles

A SPARKLING day saw Woodmansterne finally claim the Wayzgoose trophy at the third time of asking – with rivals Windles boss Bruce Podmore joking “it’s about time”!

The third annual fun and festivities was held at Windles’ Thame, Oxon, HQ on Friday, September 13, with the date proving unlucky for Windles as they only claimed victory in the five-a-side football, while Woodmansterne’s Woodies team took the table tennis, combat archery, inflatable horse racing and tug-of-war competitions.
That tally gave Watford-based Woodies the overall trophy for the first time while their other team, Wickies from their Mr Pickwick business in Milton Keynes, didn’t manage any wins.
Bruce joked “can I say, it’s about time” as he presented the trophy to Woodies’ Rob Keen, Woodmansterne’s UV production team leader and star player on the day.
And with a glittery festival theme there were plenty of sparkles to be seen as many – including Woodmansterne boss Paul Woodmansterne – donned face paints and accessories.
The Wayzgoose was revived in 2017 when Woodmansterne deputy MD Seth Woodmansterne rediscovered the longstanding tradition from the 1600s known to have been held around the August 24 feast day of St Bartholomew, the patron saint of printers, marking the annual change from working in daylight to using candles.
